A tanning salon isn't the first place you'd think of when it comes to shopping for a new wardrobe.

But The Tanning Studio is aiming to change that.

Jodi Krenz, the owner of three The Tanning Studio locations in Rib Mountain, Weston and Plover has integrated a boutique into each of the locations, called Urban Chic.

"It started with vacation wear a few years ago," Krenz said. "We were selling vacation (clothes) during the winter and customers liked what we were bringing in. They wanted to see more of it."

So Krenz attended a few fashion industry shows, such as STYLEMAX in Chicago. Together with her son, Jeremy Krenz, they established the type of clothing they wanted to sell in their tanning salons and began to purchase pieces that fit in with the style of central Wisconsin.

One of the unusual features of the boutiques is they only offer a limited number of each piece, in a range of sizes.

"Everything we offer comes in sets of six to eight," Jeremy Krenz said. "And it's all hand-picked, so it ensures that there will be six to eight total. You won't run into anyone in the same shirt."

For the Rib Mountain store, manager Ashley Hoppe selects most of the clothes the store sells. She loves being able to select the styles for the community.

"It's really fun and interesting," Hoppe said. "Rib Mountain didn't have a place like this. And now we get ages 16 through 70, so there's a very big clientele."

The style of clothing that Urban Chic Boutique offers is a little different than most stores in the area. There's more of a focus on trends and standing out.

For the past few months, the boutique has mostly been getting traffic because of the tanners that routinely go to The Tanning Salon. But now that signs are up, people have been coming in to browse for clothing more often.

Jodi Krenz wants women in the community to know that when people come into the boutique, they'll be getting service unmatched by any other store in the area. She wants her customers to know that they'll always get help picking out the perfect outfit and accessories every time they shop.

"Our customers are divas," she said. "They like to look good and feel good."

All The Tanning Studio locations have been remodeled to accommodate the addition of a boutique, and each store has something a little different. Styles found in Weston, for example, won't be the same as what the Rib Mountain or Plover stores carry.

Urban Chic Boutique will be celebrating its grand opening on Nov. 15 across all three locations, with sales and promotions. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the Rib Mountain location on Nov. 17.
